How to make a restaurant reel on your phone
A food reel that stops the scroll is one thing done well: film a single hero moment (a pour, a cheese pull, the first slice, rising steam) in soft window light, hold steady and move slow, keep it to 5–8 seconds starting on the food, shoot vertical and full-frame, and add a trending sound. The six steps to a scroll-stopping reel
1. Film ONE hero moment — that's the reel
The whole reel is one bit of motion, done well: the cheese pull, the sauce poured over, the first slice into a burger, steam rising off a bowl, a drink topped up. Pick the single most mouth-watering second of the dish and film just that. Owners try to show the whole plate from ten angles — don't. One clear hero moment beats a tour every time.
2. Light it like a photo: window, no flash
Same rule as stills. Shoot next to a window in soft daylight, light coming from the side, flash off. Motion shows every flaw harsh lighting creates — greasy shine, grey sauce, hard shadows — so soft light matters even more for video than for a photo.
3. Hold steady and move slow
Jerky, fast footage screams amateur. Brace the phone against something or hold it with both hands, and make one slow, deliberate move — a gentle push-in toward the dish, or a steady pour. Slow motion (most phones have a slo-mo mode) makes a pour or a cheese pull look ten times more premium. One smooth move, not a whip-pan.
4. Keep it short — the first second is everything
Aim for 5 to 8 seconds. People decide in the first second whether to keep watching, so start ON the food in motion — no slow intro, no empty table, no logo card first. Best moment first, then let it loop. A short reel that loops cleanly gets watched three times; a long one gets scrolled past.
5. Add a trending sound (this is most of the reach)
On Instagram and TikTok, the audio you pick drives a huge share of who sees the reel. Open the app, tap to add music, and pick a sound that's trending right now (look for the little arrow next to trending audio). Match the energy of the dish — upbeat for a busy burger, calm for a careful pour. Silent reels rarely travel.
6. Shoot vertical and fill the frame
Film in 9:16 (hold the phone upright) and get close so the food fills the screen — a reel is watched full-screen on a phone, and empty space around the plate wastes it. Wipe the lens first, shoot a few takes, and keep the one where the hero moment lands cleanest.
The 3 mistakes that kill most food reels
- Too long — anything past ~8 seconds loses people. Cut to the single best moment and let it loop.
- No hook in second one — a slow intro or an empty table kills it. Start on the food already moving.
- Shaky footage or no motion at all — brace the phone and make one slow, deliberate move. Stillness on video looks like a mistake.
A note on "AI food videos"
